Thanks for 2005: Looking Back and Moving Ahead

Diabetic Microvascular Complications Today will expand into the UK and Germany in 2006.

By Conni Bergmann Koury, Editor-in-Chief

Welcome to the last issue of Diabetic Microvascular Complications Today for 2005. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our readers for providing feedback and input toward what I hope has been – and will continue to be –  a valuable tool for specialists who treat patients suffering from the microvascular complications of this devastating disease.

Because of the support from the editorial board, staff and various authors we have had the privilege to work with, the publication has been a success! We currently reach 35,000 readers, made up of primary care physicians, diabetologists, endocrinologists, neurologists, nephrologists, podiatrists, ophthalmologists and diabetes educators. The aim of Diabetic Microvascular Complications Today is to provide insightful information for all types of readers, and it is our hope that practitioners from each subspecialty find useful information in every issue that they can apply to their own practice.

As you are well aware, diabetes is a worldwide epidemic. According to the International Diabetes Federation, it is one of the most common noncommunicable diseases, affecting approximately 194 million people worldwide. Going forward in 2006 we will expand our readership, reaching out to the United Kingdom and Germany to help bring a European perspective on this devastating disease. We will also continue to follow-up each print edition with an electronic newsletter that links to our Web site with full text access to all articles. Practitioners who live outside of our circulation areas can visit our Web site to read current and past issues of Diabetic Microvascular Complications Today.

Since our debut, we have profiled thought leaders in the field of diabetes as well as brought you a round table discussion (“Cross Specialty Management of Diabetic Patients,” Supplement to the September/October issue) from the top clinicians in various subspecialties. We have been on hand to report on clinical trials presented at major medical meetings, and we have summarized important research from various peer-reviewed journals. We have offered in-depth articles on areas of clinical practice, treatment and prevention. We have also stressed the importance of continuing education with a printed a CME activity in every issue.

Our mission remains that of providing a prime source of information and education for specialists who treat patients with diabetic neuropathy, retinopathy and nephropathy. Please continue to share your thoughts with us in order to help us craft a better publication. Looking toward 2006 we hope that Diabetic Microvascular Complications Today continues to be a useful resource as you strive to provide the best care possible for your patients.
